We are currently looking at reducing our ANR (Application Not Responding) rates on the Google Play Console. The ANR rates is particularly high on older Android versions, and we have the following message on our console: Your app currently exceeds this threshold, which is likely to make your app less discoverable on Google Play. We believe that stripping out some features (and external libraries) for older Android versions would help to reduce the number of ANRs and the size of the app for Android devices on those versions.

To do this, we hope to have 2 different Application Bundles - one for older Android versions and one for newer Android versions, but would like to clarify some points first.

  • How does Google Play know which app bundle to release to which users? Would it be a case of using minSdkVersion and maxSdkVersion to create 2 bundles (i.e. restricting the API levels), and then Google will serve the appropriate one to the user?
  • Is it also possible to restrict app bundles by country as well? If so, how is that done?
  • Will the ANR rate be measured across both App Bundles, or individually?

Thanks in advance for any help!
