I am trying to replicate what you can see here in this image.

I want to be able to either type in the text field above the box or just click on the option directly.

What would be the best way to go about that? Is there anything bootstrap related that exists already?

  • Select2 select2.github.io may be even better and more active than Chosen. See this comparison: sitepoint.com/jquery-select-box-components-chosen-vs-select2 I went for Select2 (a few months ago) because Chosen had an issue when using Chinese characters via an IME github.com/harvesthq/chosen/issues/2663 It works great. – Kai Carver Commented Feb 11, 2017 at 23:36

This simple code worked for me

<input list="brow">
<datalist id="brow">
  <option value="Internet Explorer">
  <option value="Firefox">
  <option value="Chrome">
  <option value="Opera">
  <option value="Safari">
</datalist>

Incase you need to use only select tag use Selectize Js. It has all options we require .Please Try It Demo using Selectize Js

This also supports Control buttons keyboards such as ArrowDown ArrowUp and Enter keys

You can achieve this without JavaScript using pure HTML Datalist element:

<form action="/action_page.php" method="get">
  <input list="browsers" name="browser">
  <datalist id="browsers">
    <option value="Internet Explorer">
    <option value="Firefox">
    <option value="Chrome">
    <option value="Opera">
    <option value="Safari">
  </datalist>
  <input type="submit">
</form>

  • MDN - : The HTML Data List element
  • w3schools - HTML Tag

This will work for most of us. The answer given by Hemanth Palle is the easiest way to do it, It worked for me and the JS code wasn't necessary. The only problem that I've found is that according to W3Schools, The datalist tag is not supported in Internet Explorer 9 and earlier versions, or in Safari.

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
<input list="browsers">
<datalist id="browsers">
  <option value="Internet Explorer">
  <option value="Firefox">
  <option value="Chrome">
  <option value="Opera">
  <option value="Safari">
</datalist>
</body>
</html>

If you want to reach your goal with only vanilla js, then I strongly recommend to use Tom Select library which is forked from Selectize.js and then decoupled from jQuery.

    new TomSelect("#select-state",{
        create: false,
        sortField: {
            field: "text",
            direction: "asc"
        }
    });
<html>
<head>
    <link href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/[email protected]/dist/css/tom-select.css" rel="stylesheet">
    <script src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/[email protected]/dist/js/tom-select.complete.min.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
  <select id="select-state" placeholder="Pick a state...">
    <option value="">Select a state...</option>
    <option value="AL">Alabama</option>
    <option value="AK">Alaska</option>
    <option value="AZ">Arizona</option>
    <option value="AR">Arkansas</option>
    <option value="CA">California</option>
    <option value="CO">Colorado</option>
    <option value="CT">Connecticut</option>
    <option value="DE">Delaware</option>
    <option value="DC">District of Columbia</option>
    <option value="FL">Florida</option>
    <option value="GA">Georgia</option>
    <option value="HI">Hawaii</option>
    <option value="ID">Idaho</option>
    <option value="IL">Illinois</option>
    <option value="IN">Indiana</option>
  </select>
</body>
</html>

$(document).ready(function () {
//change selectboxes to selectize mode to be searchable
   $("select").select2();
});
<html>
<head>
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.2.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<link href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/[email protected]/dist/css/select2.min.css" rel="stylesheet" />
<script src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/[email protected]/dist/js/select2.min.js"></script>

</head>
<body>
  <select id="select_page" style="width:200px;" class="operator">
         <option value="">Select a Page...</option>
         <option value="alpha">alpha</option>
         <option value="beta">beta</option>
         <option value="theta">theta</option>
         <option value="omega">omega</option>
  </select>
</body>
</html>

This was good solution but, only problem is, its inefficient for large data

Here's a handy open source library I made earlier that uses jQuery: https://bitbucket.org/warwick/searchablelist/src/master/ And here is a working copy on my VPS: http://developersfound.com/SearchableList/ The library is highly customisable with overridable behavours and can have seperate designs on the same web page Hope this helps

If you want to reach your goal with a few updates in your code just do the following

     <link rel="stylesheet" href="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/selectize.js/0.12.6/css/selectize.bootstrap3.min.css" integrity="sha256-ze/OEYGcFbPRmvCnrSeKbRTtjG4vGLHXgOqsyLFTRjg=" crossorigin="anonymous" />
    <!-- Be sure to put the links in the right position to avoid dependency issue.-->
    <script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
    <script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/selectize.js/0.12.6/js/standalone/selectize.min.js" integrity="sha256-+C0A5Ilqmu4QcSPxrlGpaZxJ04VjsRjKu+G82kl5UJk=" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>

<script>
    $(document).ready(function () {
        $('select').selectize({
            sortField: 'text'
        });
    });

  // to clear the selected value.
   $('form').find('.selectized').each(function(index, element) { element.selectize && element.selectize.clear() })

 </script>

To anyone still finding this, you'll also want to consider Select2, which does all this easily. https://select2.org/getting-started/installation

Here is a simple solution without any plugins. Only html and some jquery. You can save following code sample as a html file and test it.

function myFunction() {
  $("#dropdown-values").addClass("show");
}

$(document).click(function(e) {
  if( e.target.id != 'myInput') {
    $("#dropdown-values").removeClass("show");
  }
});

function filterFunction() {
  var input, filter, a, i;
  filter = $("#myInput").val().toUpperCase();
  div = document.getElementById("myDropdown");
  a = div.getElementsByTagName("a");
  for (i = 0; i < a.length; i++) {
    txtValue = a[i].textContent || a[i].innerText;
    if (txtValue.toUpperCase().indexOf(filter) > -1) {
      a[i].style.display = "";
    } else {
      a[i].style.display = "none";
    }
  }
}

function setValueOfInput(e) {
    $("#myInput").val(e.innerHTML);
}
.dropdown-content {
  position: absolute;
  background-color: #f6f6f6;
  overflow: auto;
}

.dropdown-content a {
  color: black;
  padding: 10px 16px;
  text-decoration: none;
  display: block;
}

.dropdown a:hover {background-color: #ddd;}

.show {display: block !important;}

.dropdown-values{
    display: none;
}
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js"></script>

<h2>Dropdown with search</h2>

<div class="dropdown">
  <div id="myDropdown" class="dropdown-content">
    <input type="text" placeholder="Search.." id="myInput" onkeyup="filterFunction()" onclick="myFunction()">
    <div id="dropdown-values" class="dropdown-values">
        <a onclick="setValueOfInput(this)">option 1</a>
        <a onclick="setValueOfInput(this)">option 2</a>
        <a onclick="setValueOfInput(this)">option 3</a>
        <a onclick="setValueOfInput(this)">option 4</a>
        <a onclick="setValueOfInput(this)">option 5</a>
    </div>
  </div>
</div>

<script type="text/javascript">

I did my own version for bootstrap 4. If you want to use it u can check. https://github.com/AmagiTech/amagibootstrapsearchmodalforselect

        elementId: 'commonWords',
        searchButtonInnerHtml: 'Search',
        closeButtonInnerHtml: 'Close',
        title: 'Search and Choose',
        bodyMessage: 'Please firstly search with textbox below later double click the option you choosed.'
    });
